On 21 September 2026, Lovable made talking to its agent free inside a daily allowance, and on 24 September it announced the change publicly. If you have ever watched a credit balance drain while you argued with an AI about what to build, that is a bigger change than it sounds. This article is only about what changed, what Lovable will and will not tell you about the new lovable free chat credits, and what it does to the cost of planning a finance app. The standing explanation of how credits work lives in our credits guide, and the full plan comparison lives in our pricing breakdown.
Two things make this worth writing down now rather than later. The first is that Lovable has attached an expiry date to it: the current chat pricing model applies through 31 October 2026 and is described in Lovable's own docs as temporary and subject to change. The second is that the allowance is genuinely useful for the part of a finance build that used to be the most expensive to get wrong, which is deciding what to build before you build it.
Every figure below was read from Lovable's own pages on 26 September 2026. Prices move, and third-party write-ups of this platform have been wrong often enough that we re-check the pricing page in a browser before every article.
What Lovable Shipped on 21 September
The changelog entry is titled "Chat with Lovable across your workspace or inside a project", and it introduced two separate surfaces plus the pricing model that covers both.
Chats, which live outside your projects
Chats is a workspace-level conversation. You start one from the dashboard prompt box with Chat selected, or at lovable.dev/chats. Lovable starts from your workspace rather than a single project, it can read your connected tools, it can create files, and each chat is private to you. There is a voice option that listens and answers aloud. When you decide on a change, the chat sends a build instruction to a project.
Chat mode, which lives inside a project
Chat mode is the third option in the project chat's mode picker, alongside Plan mode and Build mode. Lovable reads the open project's code, files and data, answers questions about it, and changes nothing. The docs describe it in the picker as "Ask anything, explore ideas". When a change is actually needed, Lovable shows a Start building card rather than quietly editing your app.
Lovable's own list of what Chat mode is for reads like a description of the work a careful builder does before touching anything:
- Ask how a part of your app works before you change it
- Talk through a feature idea and decide whether it is worth building
- Investigate an error or unexpected behaviour and find the cause
- Compare two approaches and understand what each one involves
- Check a fact in your app's data, such as whether an order was recorded
That last one matters more in finance than in most categories. Being able to ask "did this reconciliation row actually write" without spending build credits on a round trip is a real saving on a ledger or invoicing app. Our walkthrough of building a trading dashboard covers the build side of that same loop.
Lovable Free Chat Credits: How the Allowance Actually Works
Lovable runs one credit balance for everything: building, chatting, hosting, and the AI features inside your deployed app. What changed in September is that chat usage now has its own pricing model sitting on top of that balance, with its own grant.
Chat usage is priced per message, on the work Lovable does to answer, and the docs describe a typical message as costing a fraction of a credit. That price does not change when the allowance runs out. What changes is which pocket it comes out of. Spending goes through three pockets in order:
1. The daily chat allowance, which covers chat usage only.
2. Your daily build credits, which are 5 per day on every plan (capped at 30 a month on Free).
3. Your general credits, which is your actual plan balance.
So the allowance is not a separate product you can run out of and be locked out of. It is a discount on the first N messages of the day, where N is unpublished. After that you keep chatting at the same per-message price, paid from credits you already bought.
| Grant | What it covers | When it refreshes | When it expires |
|---|---|---|---|
| Daily chat allowance | Chat usage only | Every day at 00:00 UTC | End of day |
| Daily build credits | Build usage, plus chat usage once the chat allowance is gone | Every day at 00:00 UTC | End of day |
| Monthly Cloud grant | Cloud usage only, 20 credits | Free: 1st of the month. Pro and Business: billing cycle | End of that period |
| Monthly AI grant | AI features in deployed apps only, 4 credits | Free: 1st of the month. Pro and Business: billing cycle | End of that period |
Source: Lovable's credits and usage documentation, read 26 September 2026. None of these grants roll over.
One detail is easy to miss and worth planning around: Enterprise plans do not get a daily chat allowance at all. In an Enterprise workspace, chat usage draws on workspace credits from the very first message. That is the opposite of what most buyers would assume from a tier ladder, and it is stated plainly in the docs.
The Number Lovable Will Not Publish
Here is the part no competitor write-up has dealt with honestly. Lovable does not publish the size of the chat allowance anywhere. The plan table lists it as "Included" for Free and "Included, larger than Free" for Pro and Business. There is no credit figure, no message count, and no ratio between the tiers.
What you get instead is a percentage, shown in four places in the product: a ring on the Chat badge in the mode picker, the chat's own title menu, the per-reply options menu, and a Daily chat credits row on the Plans and credit usage page. Lovable's documentation gives an example of the tooltip text, which reads like "95% of free chat left (resets 2:00 AM)", with the reset shown in your local time.
Percentages are fine for a hobby project and awkward for anything you have to budget. You cannot tell whether 5% left means one more question or twenty, you cannot compare a Pro workspace against a Free one, and you cannot forecast next month from this month. If you are costing client work, that uncertainty has to be priced as a range rather than a line item. Our piece on the real unit economics of selling a Lovable app takes the same approach to the build side.
There is a second reason the number stays invisible. The docs are explicit that the daily chat allowance is not part of the credit bar and not part of the Free usage included tooltip, which does show exact figures for the other grants, for example 5/5 daily build credits left and 19.9/20 monthly Cloud credits left. The allowance sits deliberately outside the meter everyone actually watches.
Two Places Lovable's Own Pages Disagree
Re-reading both the pricing page and the docs on the same morning turned up two inconsistencies. Neither is a scandal. Both matter if you are quoting a number to a client.
A connector grant that is on the pricing page and not in the docs
Expand Free grants on any plan card at lovable.dev/pricing and you get four lines. On Business, on 26 September 2026, they read: 5 credits to build (daily), 4 credits for AI (monthly), 20 credits for Cloud (monthly), and 1 credit for Connectors (monthly). Free shows the same list with the build line qualified as "daily, up to 30 per month".
The documentation's grants table lists only four grant types, and connectors are not one of them. The connector costs section goes further and says connector usage draws from your general credits, and that the monthly Cloud and AI grants do not cover it. Read literally, the pricing page promises a monthly connector credit the docs do not acknowledge. It is one credit, so the money is trivial, but if you are modelling a Perplexity, Firecrawl or Parallel connector into a finance app, assume you pay from credit one and treat the grant as a bonus.
Rollover: one month on the pricing card, two months in the docs
The Pro card's Credit rollovers tooltip reads "Credits roll over for 1 month on monthly plans, or until one month after the end of your annual plan." The credits documentation, on the same date, says monthly plan credits expire two months from the issue date and annual plan credits one month after the annual billing period ends.
The two statements can be reconciled if "roll over for 1 month" means one extra billing cycle beyond the one they were issued in, which is two months from issue. That is probably the intent. It is also exactly the kind of ambiguity that produces an unpleasant surprise in month three, so if you are carrying a large balance, check the expiry dates in the Credit balance dialog rather than trusting either sentence.
What This Changes About Costing a Finance Build
The interesting consequence is not that chat got cheaper. It is that the cheapest part of the workflow is now the part that prevents the most expensive mistakes.
Before September, every exchange with the agent cost the same kind of money whether it produced code or produced clarity. The rational move was to prompt big and fix later, which is how people end up with a half-built reconciliation screen and a drained balance. Now the work splits cleanly into three priced tiers:
| Mode | What it does | What it costs |
|---|---|---|
| Chat mode and Chats | Discusses, reads code and data, changes nothing | Per message, fraction of a credit, allowance first |
| Plan mode | Investigates and writes a structured plan you approve | 1 credit per message, plus subagent research |
| Build mode | Writes and verifies the change | Usage-based on the work done |
For a finance app that means you can spend the free tier on the questions that actually decide the architecture. Should transactions be immutable with adjusting entries, or editable with an audit trail. Does this belong in a scheduled job or a request handler. What breaks if two users reconcile the same account at once. Those are conversations, not builds, and until 21 September you were paying build-grade prices to have them.
A few boundaries are worth memorising, because crossing them silently moves you back onto build pricing:
- Work a chat sends to a project is build usage, at standard prices.
- Images and videos Lovable generates in a chat are build usage, even inside a chat.
- Messages you send after switching from Chat mode to Build mode are build usage.
- A Build mode message you set as a goal with /goal costs noticeably more than a normal one.
- Build mode, Plan mode, image and video generation, and Cloud and AI usage are all explicitly outside this offer.
Lovable does show a card before a chat edits or creates a project, so the switch is visible rather than silent. And to see what any single reply cost, open the More options menu on it: the row reads Chat credits used, and a Free badge replaces the number when the allowance covered it.
If your app touches real account data, the planning conversation is also where the security questions belong. We covered what does and does not hold up in our look at whether Lovable is safe for financial data.
The 31 October Deadline, and How to Plan Around It
Lovable has put the same sentence in three places, which is usually a sign the company means it. The chat pricing model, including the per-message price and the daily chat allowance, applies through 31 October 2026 and is described as a temporary offering subject to change. The monthly Cloud and AI grants carry the same flag.
That does not mean chat becomes expensive on 1 November. It means the terms are not contractual and nobody outside Lovable knows what follows. Three sensible responses, in order of effort:
Measure your own allowance before it changes
The allowance is unpublished, but it is measurable. Start a day's work with an empty allowance, count your messages, and watch the percentage in the chat title menu fall. Do it once on the plan you actually pay for and you will have a number Lovable has never published, for your own workspace. Write it down with the date. If the model changes on 1 November, that note is the only baseline you will have.
Do not restructure a business around a temporary grant
If a workflow only works because chat is free, it is exposed. The honest version of the advice is that the allowance should change how you sequence work, not what your margins depend on. Build the plan-before-you-build habit because it is cheaper in build credits too, and the allowance is then a bonus rather than the foundation.
Get the expensive thinking done in the window
Five weeks is enough to specify the parts of a finance product that are painful to change later: the data model, the permission boundaries, the reconciliation rules, the reporting periods. If you have a build queued, the cheapest week to specify it was last week and the second cheapest is this one.
Who Should Care, by Plan
Free
Free gets an allowance, plus 5 build credits a day capped at 30 a month. That combination is now a genuinely usable evaluation tier: you can interrogate a project properly and still have build credits left to try something. If you are deciding whether this platform suits a finance idea at all, you can start with Lovable on the free plan and spend nothing.
Pro
Pro starts at $25 a month for 100 credits and scales up a ladder to 10,000 credits at $2,250 a month, verified on the pricing page on 26 September 2026. Pro gets a larger chat allowance than Free and uncapped daily build credits. For one person shipping one product, this is the plan, and the allowance mostly means your exploratory questions stop showing up on the usage chart.
Business
Business starts at $50 a month for 100 credits, up to 10,000 credits at $4,300 a month with a 14% saving at the top rung, same reading, same day. The allowance belongs to the workspace, not to a person, which is the detail that decides this for teams: everyone's chat messages draw on one daily pool. On a team of five that pool is shared five ways, so the practical value of the allowance falls as headcount rises, while the value of what Business actually sells, which is roles, per-member credit limits, internal publish, SSO and the security centre, does not.
Per-member credit limits are worth calling out here, because they interact with the allowance in a way the docs flag: when a member hits their limit, their chat usage pauses too, and the chat shows "Chat credit limit reached" even while the workspace's daily chat allowance still has credits in it. If you cap juniors, you cap their questions as well as their builds.
If you are running client work on top of this, the workspace and ownership questions matter more than the allowance does, and we worked through those separately in our guide to running client dashboards on Lovable. If you would rather hand the build to someone who has already made these mistakes, TJ's Lovable Expert profile is here.
How I Would Use the Allowance This Week
A concrete routine, for anyone building something with money in it:
Open a Chat, not a project, and describe the product in one paragraph. Ask Lovable to argue against it. You are looking for the objection you have not thought of, and objections are cheap in chat.
Move into the project and switch to Chat mode. Ask it to read what exists and tell you where the data model will hurt when the app has ten thousand rows instead of ten. Ask what happens on a duplicate submission, a partial refund, a currency that rounds badly.
Only then switch to Plan mode, which costs one credit a message, and get a plan you can edit and approve. Build mode last. The order is the whole point: the free tier now sits exactly where the thinking happens, and the expensive tier sits where the typing happens.
Then check what it actually cost. Workspace settings, Plans and credit usage, Usage details, Build credits, and read the Chat group. Chat usage covered by the allowance or by daily build credits does not appear there at all, so an empty Chat group is the outcome you want.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is chat with Lovable actually free?
Within a daily allowance, yes, on Free, Pro and Business. Past the allowance you keep chatting at the same per-message price, paid from your daily build credits and then your general credits. Enterprise workspaces have no allowance and pay from the first message.
How many free chat credits do you get per day?
Lovable does not publish a figure. The plan table says "Included" for Free and "Included, larger than Free" for Pro and Business, and the product shows you a percentage of today's allowance rather than a count. Measuring it on your own workspace is currently the only way to get a number.
When does the daily chat allowance reset?
Every day at 00:00 UTC. It does not roll over, so an unused allowance is simply gone at end of day. The tooltip shows the reset time converted to your local time zone, which is why two people in different countries see different reset times for the same pool.
Does Chat mode ever change my code?
No. Chat mode reads and discusses. Changes begin only after the conversation moves to Build mode, either by selecting Build on the Start building card or by switching mode yourself, and from that point you are on build pricing.
What happens on 31 October 2026?
Lovable has not said. The documentation states that the current chat pricing model applies through that date and is temporary and subject to change. Treat anything after it as unknown, and avoid building a cost model that only works while chat is free.
Does the allowance cover Lovable in Slack and Telegram?
Yes. The same chat pricing covers messages in Chats, in Chat mode, through Slack and Telegram, and each request you make in a voice conversation.
The Short Version
Lovable made conversation cheap and left the number unpublished. For a finance build that is a real improvement, because the conversation is where the costly decisions get made and the build is only where they get typed. Use the five weeks to specify carefully, measure your own allowance while it exists, and keep your cost model honest about the fact that this is a temporary offer with a date on it.
If you want to try it, you can start on Lovable's free plan and upgrade only when a build needs it. Teams that need roles, per-member credit limits, internal publish and a security centre should look at the Business plan, and anyone who would rather not learn this by trial should look at the Expert directory.
