Common Mistakes
Confusing Change and Difference
Percentage change from 50 to 75 is +50% (relative to old). Percentage difference between 50 and 75 is 40% (relative to their average of 62.5). Using the wrong one gives misleading comparisons.
Percentage Points vs Percentages
Going from 10% to 15% is a 5 percentage-point increase but a 50% increase in the rate itself. Mixing these up is common in financial reporting and can lead to very different conclusions.
Applying Percentages in the Wrong Order
A 20% markup on cost followed by a 20% discount does not break even. $100 cost → $120 marked up → $96 after discount = $4 loss. Percentages are not additive across different base values.
